The recorder had a strip of masking tape across the top, and someone had written *Dariusz - Christmas? * in blue ballpoint and then crossed it out. The rewind button was stuck halfway down. I pressed record with my thumb and a red light came on, and I stood there in the closet doorway while it ran, and ran - and ran into nothing.

The recorder was the size of a deck of cards and I set it between the salt shaker and his coffee, which had gone cold an hour before. He looked at it the way he looked at the remote control, with his chin pulled back. Tell me about the Singer, I said, and he said - which Singer, and picked up his cup.

He opened his mouth and a sound came out that wasn't a word, more like the first syllable of a word that had been stored somewhere damp. His two fingers went to his temple the way you press a bruise to check if it's still there. The machine was a Singer, he said, black - with the gold - and then his hand dropped to the tablecloth and he smoothed a wrinkle that wasn't there. It was - I had it, he said, and the red light blinked, and the ash in the sugar bowl had gone gray.

The driveway light came on when she pulled in and then went off again. She held the recorder against her sternum with both hands, the way you'd hold something that might spill. His voice came through the small speaker - *I had it* - and then the hiss - and then *I had it* again, the same catch on the *had*, and a dog somewhere on the street started and stopped. The porch was twelve steps away and the recorder was still warm from the glove compartment and she stayed where she was.

The folder lives on the desktop between a tax file and something called *Misc2019* and she has never moved it. Inside: one audio file, forty-one seconds, and a scan so pale the man's face is mostly grain and the machine beside him is a dark shape the color of a bruise. His jacket has three buttons and she has counted them. The light behind him could be a window or a door and she has never been able to tell which way he was facing when whoever held the camera said - now.

She found a notebook in her mother's junk drawer, spiral-bound, the cover warped from an old spill, and inside the first page her mother had written *ask D. about the machine - what city, which border* and then a phone number with the wrong area code crossed out twice.

The notebook had forty-two blank pages after that.

She sat at the kitchen table and opened it to the second page and wrote *Singer - black - gold detail, three buttons on his jacket* and then stopped because she didn't know if the buttons were his or the machine's, and the audio file was on her laptop upstairs, and the stairs were twelve steps, and she didn't go up.

She bought a second notebook at the pharmacy - same brand, and wrote *Singer* on the cover in permanent marker so she would know which one to open first, and then set them both in the drawer and closed it.

The drawer stuck the way it always had, needing a lift and a pull, and she had learned that from her mother without ever being taught it.

Her daughter came downstairs in socks and asked what was for dinner and she said Tuesday's leftovers and the drawer was closed and neither of them mentioned it.

Her daughter set a phone on the table one morning with a voice-memo app open - the waveform already pulsing green, and said, tell me something about your family, just anything, and she looked at the green line moving and said - my great-grandfather carried a sewing machine across - and stopped, because she didn't know which word came next, border or river or mountain, and her daughter waited with her chin in her hand, and the green line kept moving over the silence the way water moves over a stone it has already worn smooth.

She found the Singer in an image search once - a Tuesday, the kitchen still smelling of toast, and the machine on the screen had gold scrollwork along the arm and a hand wheel the color of old teeth, and she turned the laptop toward her daughter and said, like this - I think like this, and her daughter looked up from her own phone and said, pretty, and looked back down.

The photograph from the folder she had printed finally, four inches by six - and taped to the inside of the cabinet above the kettle, and sometimes when she reached for a mug her wrist brushed it and once the tape gave on one corner and she pressed it back with her thumb and the man's face went briefly white where she touched.

She wrote *border or river* on a Post-it and stuck it to the Singer notebook and then couldn't remember what the question was supposed to remind her to ask, or who was left to ask it.

She found a name in the notebook her mother had left - not the spiral one, a different one, smaller - with a green cover she didn't remember seeing before - a woman's name, first only, Bożena, written above a number with too many digits, and below it - in her mother's hand, *she was there, she remembers the machine. *

The number rang eight times and she counted them, standing at the window where the street was wet and a single car sat with its wipers going against nothing.

A woman answered and breathed and said hello twice, and she opened her mouth and couldn't think which language to start in - and the woman said hello a third time in a voice that had age in it, the particular age that makes a voice sound like a room that hasn't been opened, and she said, I'm sorry, wrong number - and stood there after, the green notebook still open in her hand to the page with the name on it.
